Just Haven't Met You Yet - Sophie Cousens
From the New York Times bestselling author of This Time Next Year comes a heartwarming and hilarious tale that asks: What if you picked up the wrong suitcase and fell head over heels for its mystery owner?
Hopeless romantic and lifestyle reporter Laura’s business trip to the Channel Islands isn’t off to a great start. After an embarrassing encounter with the most attractive man she’s ever seen in real life, she arrives at her hotel and realizes she’s grabbed the wrong suitcase from the airport. Her only consolation is its irresistible contents, each of which intrigues her more and more. The owner of this suitcase is clearly Laura’s dream man. Now, all she has to do is find him.
Besides, what are the odds that she’d find The One on the same island where her parents first met and fell in love, especially as she sets out to write an article about their romance? Commissioning surly cab driver Ted to ferry her around seems like her best bet in tracking down the mystery suitcase owner and retracing her parents’ footsteps. But as Laura’s mystery man proves difficult to find—and as she uncovers family secrets—she may have to reimagine the life, and love, she always thought she wanted.

During my trip to Barnes and Noble, I was exploring for the perfect book to get me out of my reading slump, and I ventured to the Rom-Com section📍. While searching, this book caught my eye 👀. I decided to read the blurb, and I loved this idea! It was original and nothing like the past romance novels I have read. So I bought the book and finished it over three days!
“People like to fill in the gaps, to paint their own picture, but no one really knows the truth of someone else’s story.” ~ Sophie Cousens, Just Haven't Met You Yet
So, the book is about Laura, a lifestyle author who writes about meet-cutes, a hopeless romantic, who is searching for her perfect man. Someone who checks every single one of her boxes. She pitches her boss the idea of writing about her parent’s delightful love story. Her boss agrees and Laura decides to go to New Jersey to experience the place where the romantics met. When a mix-up with a stranger's suitcase at the hotel sets off a chain of events that turns Laura's world upside down 💼. As she looks into the contents she finds that the mystery man turns out to be her dream man - a person that ticks all of her boxes ✅! It’s like she finally experienced her own meet-cute. As Laura goes on in her journey she befriends a cordial but quiet cab driver, he agrees to drive her to the places she needs to be, alongside helping her find her unknown true love❣️. But as the truth starts to unfold, Laura's priorities begin to shift, and she starts to question whether her idea of the perfect love story matches reality. Is her love story going to be like the one she has imagined?
Onto some things, I enjoyed in this book… I loved how realistic the writing was, and how easy it was to put yourself into the character’s shoes 👟 and see how they are feeling. The romance wasn’t overboard and I also liked how the somber moments were perfectly woven throughout and weren’t the encompassing theme; moreover, the plot wasn’t unrealistic - it was the perfect dose of foolishness 😲. The humorous parts with bantering, teasing, and overall the character’s dialogue were chef’s kiss.
Something I didn’t enjoy about the book was how it was sometimes very slow-paced 🦥, and how near the end I felt like skipping some pages to get to the conclusion… but that’s maybe just because I am a very impatient person 🥲.
Plot and Themes:
In general, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book👌. The characters were all very likable, the dialogue was clever, humorous, and delightful, and it's an ideal read for a road trip during the holiday season ✈️.
